With the Circuit Breaker in force, I decided, on the spur of the moment, to buy a watermelon from a nearby supermarket and place it anonymously at the doorstep of a parishioner to tell him and his family that they are loved.
However, I had to duck under his window with the huge and heavy watermelon as he was working from home that day and he would have seen me. My rickety knees held out on the duck walk to his doorstep and back to the lift lobby.
My good friend sensed someone at the door. On opening the door he found the watermelon but was uneasy over the anonymous gift. He decided to discard the watermelon by leaving it in the void deck.
The next morning, as this friend made no mention of his find, I decided to send him a text greeting with a picture of a watermelon in the background. He then related to me what had happened the day before. I was wide-jawed that the watermelon didn’t find the intended person. My intention to pleasantly surprise the family had misfired. I did not leave a note with the watermelon!
Until this day I have not confessed that I was the one at the door. Perhaps they will know now.
