This week as we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, let us reflect on our own baptism when God stood with us and lifted us from the muddy waters of sin. God then incorporated us into the body of Christ empowering us to lead the life of Christ.

We have read in the scriptures about the Baptism of our Lord by John the Baptist who was offering a baptism of repentance for sinners at the muddy waters of the river Jordan. It is a beautiful and humbling revelation of how the sinless Son of God got into the waters of Jordan and stood shoulder to shoulder with the sinners who were getting baptised. He humbled Himself and asked John to baptise him.  The sinless Son of God stands side by side with the sinners and identifies with them and gets ready for his mission to offer Himself as a sacrifice to reconcile human beings back to God.  As Jesus comes out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends upon him signalling Him as the chosen one from the rest of the sinners and the voice of God reveals publicly who Jesus is as son of God.

By revealing Jesus, God also revealed that He is a Trinity of Persons. The Baptism of the Lord at Jordan was not only Jesus’ first public manifestation but also His first public revelation of the Blessed Trinity

At every Baptism, this is what happens, our Lord cleanses us from the dirt of our sins, and original sin as the waters of Baptism wash over us and reconciles us with God in the Holy Spirit. Through our Baptism we are bestowed with graces and gifts that uplift us from our past sinful lives to draw us into the life of the Trinity. Let us not take our baptism lightly. Let us hold firmly to this faith. This is the faith that saves us.
