Mary of Magdala went to the tomb with others because of her great love for the Lord. There was indeed deep appreciation on the part of Mary of Magdala for what the Lord had done for her. She wanted to do whatever possible for the Lord; even though he was thought to be dead. Her thought might have been, ‘This is the least I can do for my Lord.’ When Mary of Magdala saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb” she said “and we don’t know where they have put him”.

Finding the empty tomb would have added to the pain that she had already endured. Not being satisfied with killing her Lord, they now steal the body so that there can be no peace even in death. This would be adding to the trauma she had endured. It is also easy to come to wrong conclusions when one is in such a situation for our minds are closed and we are in a state of trying to deal with the issues already at hand. What would you do in such a state of turmoil? Would you just break down and be bewildered? Would you finally give up? Would you feel defeated? Would you be able to see that out of this darkness and tears a wonderful rainbow will be formed?

Alleluia! Indeed Jesus Christ has risen and triumphed over death!

As God’s chosen ones, we are given this new lease of life by God. We are invited therefore to live in such a way that reflects this new life. A life of hope, peace, and joy.

“I have risen and am with you still. Alleluia.” (Psalm 138: 18, 5-6)
