About Bethel/ Gilgal

Why do we stop using “Bethel” and “Gilgal”?

The literal meaning of Bethel is “House of God”. Yet, as a proper name, it has changed its meaning overtime,
from good to bad.

After the death of Solomon, the united kingdom was divided into North and South. King Jeroboam of the
northern kingdom feared his people would continue worshipping in Jerusalem and lose their loyalty. He
therefore set up a golden calf at Bethel (1 Kings 12:26–33) and another at Dan.

From then on, Bethel became a center of false worship, thus many prophets condemned its corruption, and it
became a symbol of Israel’s unfaithfulness. (See Amos 3–5 and Hosea 4:15, 10:5). Thus, Bethel has acquired
a strong negative connotation to its name. It is therefore inappropriate to name our worship hall “Bethel”.

Likewise, Gilgal, though was a historically significant city. has acquired a bad name in later years. Prophets
had condemned it for the idolatrous practices. We find two examples in Hosea 4:15 and Amos 4:4). As such,
Gilgal will be removed from the naming of our rooms

ELISHA Leadership Journey 2027

Peace be with you.  The Catholic Leadership Centre (CLC) is launching its 6th run of the ELISHA Leadership Journey in 2027 — a structured six-month formation journey for new and emerging leaders to deepen their discipleship and grow in leadership, so that they can better support our clergy in building a more vibrant, evangelising and missionary Church.

Since its inception, more than 150 Catholic leaders across the Archdiocese have journeyed together through ELISHA, growing in faith and leadership, and returning renewed and strengthened to serve in their ministries and parish communities.

What is the ELISHA Leadership Journey
The ELISHA Leadership Journey is a foundational formation programme for new and emerging Catholic leaders comprises five training courses and one stay-in retreat in the first half of 2027, from January to July 2027.

It begins with a Day of Recollection, where leaders come together as a community to reflect on their relationship with God, share hopes, and commit to the journey ahead. Through the courses and retreat, participants learn to lead like Jesus, reflect on inner wounds and healing, cultivate listening and facilitation skills, build deeper trust, and discern their unique charisms. The journey concludes with a Milestone Day, celebrating the graces received, followed by a Follow-Up Gathering to reconnect and be renewed in faith and fellowship.  (Please see the attached e-brochure for more details on the courses and retreat.)
