Theme – Emmanuel, God with us
Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy found in Micah 5:1(2):
“But you, Bethlehem-Ephrathah, least among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from of old, from ancient times.”
The Son of God’s perfection of humility is revealed by the immediate circumstances of His birth, taking place not in a royal palace, not in a nice home, but in a cave where animals dwelt.
December 25 was chosen regardless of the actual historical date and is now cemented within our Christian tradition. It’s important to remember that the Church celebrates the Solemnities for eight straight days, an octave. Christmas Day, December 25, through January 1, marks Jesus’ birth as the first day of the year in which an abundance of grace is poured forth upon those who believe and honor His birth.
Let us commit ourselves, this year and every year, to a celebration of Christmas that goes beyond mere gifts, good food, and gatherings. Always be prayerful and give thanks to God for His Incarnation and Birth. Let the Christmas celebration be one that is permeated with faith, so that the Light of the World can penetrate the darkness of the world in which we live.
The liturgical color theme is white in Ordinary Time, with accents of red and green.
– White, the color of light, symbolizes joy, cleanliness, goodness, loyalty, innocence, unity, and purity resulting from faith that listens to God’s voice and believes. It also symbolizes righteousness, conquest, victory, peace, saints, completion, triumph, and the beginning of a new life.
– Red symbolizes atonement, sacrifice, life, flesh, passion, love, courage, strength, warmth, and security.
– Green symbolizes praise, spiritual growth in Christ, nurtured by the Church and the Gospel. Green represents new life, anticipation, new beginnings, flourishing, healing, restoration, and hope.
