Reflections by Petals Ministry for Feast of the Holy Family in Ordinary Time

Theme – Holy Family

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph – Feast falls within the octave of Christmas. As we honor the Holy Family, we prayerfully ponder the daily life the Holy Family shared: the kindness, respect, obedience, unity, charity, and every other Christian virtue that they lived, becoming the model for our Christian living and for our family life.

Mary and Joseph watched how Jesus grew in acquired knowledge, learning with a human mind through sensory experience and conceptual understanding. They too participated in it, grew from it themselves, and Mary “pondered all these things in her heart” (Luke 2:51).

We too should always ponder the Holy Family’s relationships and charity, using them as a model for how to relate to our own family. We should look into our own hearts and always ask the Holy Family to teach us how to show greater love to those in our family. Though we may never arrive at perfection, we can receive inspiration from the Holy Family’s lives, leading to greater growth and unity, making our own family a greater source of strength for our Christian living.

The liturgical color theme is white in Ordinary Time with a pinch of red, blue, and green.
– White, the color of light, symbolizes joy, cleanliness, goodness, loyalty, innocence, unity, and purity resulting from faith that listens to God’s voice and believes. It also symbolizes righteousness, conquest, victory, peace, saints, completion, triumph, and the beginning of a new life.
– Red symbolizes atonement, sacrifice, life, flesh, passion, love, courage, strength, warmth, and security.
– Blue symbolizes serenity, stability, inspiration, reliability, and wisdom.
– Green symbolizes praise, spiritual growth in Christ, nurtured by the Church and the Gospel. Green represents new life, anticipation, new beginnings, flourishing, healing, restoration, and hope.
