The Gospel today encourages us to rethink our understanding of leadership as shown in Jesus’s example. Especially in a world which often celebrates power, Jesus calls us to a way of life marked by humility and service. James and John’s request to sit at Jesus’ right and left in glory reveals a desire for recognition and influence, a longing that resonates with many of us. Yet Jesus redirects us to think about the way we live our lives. He teaches us that greatness is not found in being served, but by serving others. Discipleship is not about seeking personal gain, but about committing to a lifetime of selfless service. He models this in the way he gives up his life for us, showing that real leadership and recognition comes from placing others before ourselves, even at great personal cost.

This teaching challenges our worldly views, which often equate power and prestige with success, reminding us that the path to God’s kingdom calls us to constantly reevaluate our motivations. As followers of Christ we are invited to set aside this ambition, and instead embrace a life of servanthood and to recognize what we gain spiritually from placing ourselves out there in love and service. The gospel hence challenges us to reflect on our motivations and encourage us to embody Christ’s love in all we do.
