Jesus appears to the disciples by the Lake of Tiberias. This is the third recording of Jesus appearance to his disciples.
Indeed it is fascinating to see what began as an ordinary cooked breakfast became a deep experience of forgiveness and renewal for Peter. Notice initially how the disciple whom Jesus loved informed Peter, “It is the Lord.” At these words “It is the Lord”, Simon Peter, who had practically nothing on, wrapped his cloak round him and jumped into the water.” John 21:7. For some of us, this scene plays out as a response of courage and faith. Often when we are confronted with the unknown, we immediately sense anxiety and fear, it could be a new job, a new environment, an illness or when called to evangelize to others. Peter jumped into water, he did not have any second thoughts! How is this possible that he believed and is hopeful of who is in front of him?
During this Easter season, we are reminded that in our Baptism, we are entrusted with a mission to love and serve others in Jesus’ name. Like Peter, we are forgiven as God our Father healed and restored us. He opened our eyes, our ears and our hearts so that we can be like Peter sent to love and serve others as Jesus did. The key in this story is to love. Perhaps during this season, we want to allow God our Father to invite us to experience his meal together and to love one another as He did.
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
