In today’s first reading, Prophet Jeremiah spoke about God’s promise of the “New Covenant” because the old covenants were broken by the people’s iniquities. The new covenant will be made through Jesus Christ His Son. As Jesus came to show us how to live as a child of our Father through obedience, we are called to imitate him. The willingness to imitate Jesus must come from the heart of each person. The willingness to follow Jesus cannot from a heart filled with fear of going to hell or just breaking the commandments. The willingness to follow Jesus must come from a heart filled with love for the Lord. It is this love that will bind us to do what Jesus did whilst on earth. Jesus came to make our Father known and the ways of living as a child of our Father. In doing this, we have the law of the Lord written in our hearts. Love will bind us to our Father as love bound Jesus to our Father.
Loving this life on earth with the entertainment that comes along with it will only distract us from being with the Lord. It is this distraction that moves our hearts to want the things of this world. To love the things of this world lends itself to abandoning the ways of the Lord. A life filled with material satisfaction blinds us to what Jesus did and is offering to us.
